Cryptotia Ear Deformity Correction
Parents will often state that the top of the ear looks like it is hidden underneath the skin of the scalp. This deformity is called Cryptotia and the top of the ear cartilage is all there, but it is buried underneath the skin.
Cryptotia Ear Deformity
Cryptotia can be successfully corrected non-surgically with ear molding when started early after birth (first few weeks). The ear cartilage is pulled out from underneath the skin and the skin behind the top of the ear is slowly and gently stretched. This allows a groove to form between the top of the ear and the scalp skin.
If cryptotia is not corrected early with ear molding, it will need surgery in the future with skin grafting to create the groove behind the ear.
